September Downtown Community Meeting

Thursday, September 12th
Royal Oak Public Library

Join us for our next monthly downtown community meeting, organized by the DDA's Downtown Manager.

This month we will be speaking with Benjamin Ogden of the Welcome Inn Day Center regarding the status of homelessness programs in Downtown Royal Oak.

We will also be discussing a centralized community calendar for downtown events and programs. This calendar is provided by a new Oakland County tourism website that features downtown Royal Oak.

Join the growing list of businesses who are promoting their live music performances each week through Live Music Thursdays- a community owned and community led program to showcase Royal Oak as a live music destination.

Looking to update your buildings facade or trying to get a new commercial sign? The DDA offers a facade and sign grant program that reimburses applicants 50% of their costs up to $10,000. Applications are available at the meeting.

As always, time is reserved at the end of the meeting to discuss additional topics of concern to business owners and residents. If there an item you'd like to discuss, contact the Downtown Manager at or call 248-914-4589

Pink Out Royal Oak

Pink Out Royal Oak is a city-wide campaign that is looking to get as many businesses and residents involved in 'pinking-out' the City of Royal Oak. There are many ways you and your business can get involved. (Information posted on

Pink Out Royal Oak is presented by the Royal Oak Restaurant Association (RORA) to benefit the American Cancer Society. This October-long promotion will be packed with several events in Royal Oak to benefit a great cause, such as Restaurant Week, Beer Stroll, Pink Passes, Penny Drive, Real Men Wear Pink Car Wash, Gift Card Donations and more. In addition to these events, downtown Royal Oak will be “pinked-out” with pink ribbons, and pink storefronts! The American Cancer Society is also bringing a 5K to our downtown on October 12th!

Penny Jars – This is probably the easiest way to get involved. We have over 500 penny jars that can be placed in your business for employees and customers to donate loose change to the cause. Jars can be dropped off when filled at Bingo Pet Salon, Rock on 3rd, Lilly’s Seafood, or you can bring it to a local OUR Credit Union and have it deposited directly into our campaign account (They are waiving all charges for the change counting machines). Penny jars can also be placed at schools, churches, or even residents can take one to collect coins among family and friends.

Pink Pass – Another easy way for businesses to get involved. Businesses can be a part of the Pink Pass by offering a discount (daily, weekly, whatever works for you) to people who purchase the pass. Passes are $5, and are good for the entire month of October. Examples: Bingo Pet Salon: Free Teeth Brush or Oatmeal Bath on Monday-Thursday with pass ; Escape Room: $7 off passes all month long ; Aqua Salon: $25 off Cut/Color on Fridays.

Pink Pass Raffle – Offer an item for raffle. Can be a gift certificate or an actual item from your business. Raffles will take place every night during October.

Pink Out – We have pink ribbons to sell (donation and tape to wall), window clings, and other decorations you can pick up to use and PINK OUT your business.

Wednesdays We Wear Pink – Encourage your employees to wear pink on Wednesdays. Offer a discount to clients who wear pink on Wednesdays. Blow up your social media. Make it fun. And don’t forget to use the hashtag #PinkOutRoyalOak with all social media postings.

Pink Drink – For bars and restaurants, come up with a cool “Pink Drink” special and donate a $1 or $2 from each drink back to the campaign.

Guest Bartender – Some of the local bars are using a breast cancer survivor as a “guest bartender” to raise money.
