Bill Freehan

Honoring a Hometown Legend

Join us as we honor one of Royal Oak’s greatest hometown heroes — Detroit Tigers legend Bill Freehan — with a special celebration at Memorial Park, Field #3!

WHEN: July 22 at 6:35 PM — during the Royal Oak Leprechauns game, with the opening pitch thrown by a member of the Freehan family.

WHERE: Memorial Park (13 Mile and Woodward), Field #3 — where the legend launched an epic 402-foot homer while playing in the Royal Oak Sandlot League!

We’ll be marking the approximate spot where teenage Bill Freehan launched a 402-foot rocket that cleared the concession stand and, according to some, rolled all the way to 13 Mile Road — a moment still whispered about by longtime locals.

From Memorial Park to Tiger Stadium and beyond.

Royal Oak Senior Center Renovation Update

Renovations at the Senior Center, 3500 Marais, are moving right along! Drywall is up, and taping and mudding have begun.

Next up:

  • New lighting and ceiling tiles are being installed in the workout room.
  • Fresh lighting is going into Rooms 4 and 5.
  • Old carpet is coming out soon to make way for brand-new carpet squares.

While the Senior Center is closed, staff have relocated to the Royal Oak Public Library to continue serving you throughout the project.

  • Transportation and travel services will continue as usual.
  • ROSES and AGE counseling and support programs will continue as usual.
  • If you're registered for a program, staff will be in touch with updates. We're working hard to find alternative locations for as many programs as possible to minimize any disruption.

Renovations are expected to be completed by August 18. We can't wait to welcome you back to a brighter, better Senior Center!

Thank you for your patience as we work to create an improved facility for all.
