NEW! Composting Posters

We have revised the composting posters based on feedback from many of you. The new poster addresses some of the contamination concerns and questions we often get asked each week. There is a version with words and a version with text.

Compost Contamination

Contamination is growing now that staff and volunteers have moved inside. Please be sure to let staff and volunteers know if something is in the bins that should not be. Please also review the most common contamination materials below.

  • Bags that are green but not compostable—Last week, around 10 plastic bags with food scraps inside were pulled from the bin. To be placed in the bin, all bags MUST have a BPI logo. If they have a #2 symbol, they are plastic. We sell certified compost bags inside to make this easy!
  •  Last week, we pulled a travel hair spray can out of someone's compost bag.
  • Twist ties for produce must be removed.
  • Paper dinnerware also needs to be BPI-certified. Most are not labeled, so if you are unsure, please leave them out.
  • Pizza boxes that have inserts and plastic still inside. These need to be removed, and we only want super cheesy/greasy boxes. Medium and light cheesy/greasy can be recycled curbside. See the new recommendations on this HERE.
