The centennial event will include activities in City Hall, the Royal Oak Police Station, the Royal Oak Public Library, and the Henry Ford Health System Medical Center. A dedication of Centennial Commons -- Royal Oak's new downtown park-- is also a part of the planned festivities.
We'll be focusing on what life was like in the roaring twenties in Royal Oak against the backdrop of brand new municipal buildings and a gorgeous downtown park. We hope to incorporate the best of our past with the best of our present to give us all hope for the future!
Here's what's planned:
The historic farmers market, which was built in 1925 and is just shy of its own centennial, will host its annual Holiday Magic Craft Show and a tree lighting ceremony. The market will also feature popular entertainment from the Jazz Age and there will be s'mores stations and chestnut roasting on its porches.
At City Hall, we'll be showing Charlie Chaplin's The Kid, which won Best Picture in 1921. There will also be an history exhibit and a chance to see the Royal Oak Roots Mural and meet its artists --- Laurie Eisenhardt and Marcia Hovland.
Make vintage buttons at the Royal Oak Public Library and learn about the history of our great city. While you are there, checkout all the renovations to the the facility,
The police station will host a holiday workshop for kids in its modern community room on the second floor. It's your chance to peek inside the new station and help us create cards for seniors, hospital patients, military personnel and anyone else that could use a little holiday cheer.
Centennial Commons will open for the first time to the public! Tour the park and meet historical figures from our city's past, who will share with us how Royal Oak has grown, courtesy of the artists at Shakespeare Royal Oak.
Our new neighbors at the Henry Ford Health System Medical Center are planning to open their doors to join us in celebrating, too.
In addition, there will be horse drawn trolley rides, carolers, historical walking tours, giveaways and much more.
If you or your organization are interested in participating or volunteering for this event, please email Judy Davids at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 248-246-3201.
